Which strategy sounds better to you?
Both the model portfolio and the buy and hold portfolio started with the
same amount of money, ran for the same amount of time (ups and downs), but
ended vastly different. What created the difference? Market
Timing. We want to be in the market when the market is going up and
out (or short) when the market is going down.
The Model Portfolio doesn't trade penny stocks, options, use margin, or use any
other risky type of strategy. Trades are made an average of 20 days
apart so there isn't a lot to do except watch your portfolio grow.
The Model Portfolio results are created through the use of our market timing
strategies combined with an index trading strategy. We created these
results just through the buying and selling of just two stocks.

When the market is in an uptrend, the stock portfolio buys and owns shares
of VTI. VTI is an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) that closely mimics the
performance of the broad market. Using the VTI allows us to use
momentum trading strategies to their fullest.
When the market is in a downtrend, we go short by purchasing and holding
shares of SH. SH is a Contra-ETF and is designed to go up in price
when the broad market decreases in price. Purchasing shares of SH
allows the stock portfolio to effectively sell short by buying an ETF with
short characteristics.
